Our songwriting workshop is now into its third week, and we’re still getting new participants coming along – which is fantastic news! Classes are being led by James Grant (Love & Money), who is a singer-songwriter from Glasgow.
New members of the workshop had the chance to sit down and discuss with James, what their influences are, what kind of music they like to listen to, and if they have had any experience in writing – what kind of music they like to write themselves.
Returning members of the workshop were working away on and playing the song they had been writing over the past couple of weeks, while the new participants were set a writing task. The task was called a ‘ghost writing’ exercise. We listened to James perform the song, then having the lyric sheet in front of us, changed the words to make our own song. The song in question was called Crazy Love, by Van Morrison, and was made up of a basic chord sequence – this factor making it easier for the participants to change the tone or style of the song they were writing.
Participants were given 15 minutes to complete the writing task, and once they had completed it, James then played their song on his guitar, putting each one to a different style of music.
